Malovey Labs is the custom software studio for cities, and for the organizations that keep their culture running.
We build custom software for galleries, festivals, business improvement areas, artist-run centres and the public bodies around them: maps and archives, websites and internal tools, whatever the work calls for. Most of them have more ambition than budget, years of material nobody can find, and no developer on staff. That's the gap we fill.
The studio grew out of Ottawalls, a bilingual archive of Ottawa's street art built with no client and no budget. Ottawa Tourism, four BIAs and Apt613 now embed it on their own sites, CBC covered it, and we still look after it. It showed us what cultural organizations actually need: software that fits how they already work, and someone who sticks around after launch.
We bring ten years of building software, including at Shopify and SurveyMonkey, to arts and culture.
We're based in Ottawa and work with cities across Canada and the European Union. Everything we have made is in the archive.
How we work
Embed
We start inside your organization: with the staff who will use it, the data you already have, and the site you already run.
Build and ship
We build in small working pieces you can see and use, and ship into your existing systems rather than around them.
Stay on
After launch we host it, fix it and keep it current. The code and data are yours, documented so anyone could pick them up.
